LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon)

LOIC and Operation Payback

LOIC (Low Ion Orbit Cannon) is a program with which a tremendous numbers of inquiries to a selected web server (network) is made possible, where several LOIC clients merge into a centrally controllable swarm. LOIC is programmed in C# and was originally used by network administrators in order to be able to run a stress test for their own systems. During this stress test, the data line is also massively used, so that other inquiries can achieve the target server more difficult or even not at all. The information that administrators can gain from this test provides them with the maximum resilience of their network. With the Low Orbit Ion Canon it is possible to force defined target (web server) with the protocols TCP (Transmission Control Protocol), UDP (user DataGram Protocol) and HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol) to process senseless inquiries. As a standard action, the tool opens a TCP connection to port 80 of the target server and sends freely adjustable string chains. In the log files of the attacked web server, error messages appear. The option for UDP packages enables distributed Denial of Service (DDOS) attacks that aim to paralyze the network infrastructure.

During Operation Payback which started on December 7th, 2010, LOIC was used to launch targeted DDOS attacks on the websites of Swiss PostFinance, the Mastercard Inc., PayPal, Visa and www.moneybookers.com, to paralyze them. In the Operation Payback, the LOIC users entered the address of a coordination server and then left the control to the HIVEMIND, which means to the coordination group of Anonymous. This is comparable to a botnet on a voluntary basis. The Windows version of LOIC uses a IRC-server as the commander.

How to setup and use LOIC

Low Orbit Ion Cannon (LOIC) is an open source network stress tool, written in C#. LOIC is based on Praetox's LOIC project. You can download LOIC from here at own risk.
Using HIVEMIND mode will connect your client (computer) to an IRC server so it can be controlled remotely. Think of it like a voluntary botnet.
Set LOIC on HIVEMIND mode or see the topic in main IRC channel of AnonOps (irc.anonops.com).
Note 1: It does NOT allow remote administration of your machine, or anything like that, it is just control of LOIC itself.
Note 2: HIVEMIND mode will no longer be hosted on AnonOps servers due to legal actions from certain groups. A de-centralized version is being worked on.

Setup:

For Windows
You need to download first the Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 and install it.
Download LOIC Windows binary and unzip it to your desktop.
Start LOIC with the LOIC.EXE.

  • Server: irc.server.address
  • Channel: #loic
  • Select "hivemind mode"
  • Sit back and watch the show
Note to replace irc.server.address and the channel according to announcements via AnonOps IRC. Join #setup on AnonOps IRC and ask.

For MAC OS
Download LOIC (with windows binaries) for MAC OS from download page and extract in desktop.
Choose which HIVEMIND feature (Mono or Wine): If you want to start up in Hivemind mode, run something like:
LOIC.exe /hivemind irc.server.address
which will connect to irc://irc.server.adress:6667/loic
You can also specify a port and channel:
LOIC.exe /hivemind irc.server.address 1234 #secret
which will connect to irc://irc.server.adress:1234/secret

For LINUX (Debian/Ubuntu/Fedora)
Install monodevelop from here
Shell script for legacy distributions with mono .net 4.0 is available here
Shell script for distributions with mono .net 4.5 is available here

Go through the above steps 2-3 times if you can't get it working.
If you still can't fix it:
Join #setup for Win/Nix or #nubbintank for MACs on AnonOps IRC, and ask.

FAQ:
  • Is LOIC infected with a virus? NO, your AV gives a false positive. Disable your antivirus program. The source code is included in the download to prove this.
  • Will I get caught/arrested for using it? Chances are next to zero. Just blame you have a virus, or simply deny any knowledge of it.
  • Can I use a PROXY? NO, you will just attack the proxy. But a VPN is OK.
  • LOIC cant connect; Turn off MSE or your Firewall. Still no go; On AnonOps IRC, type /map and choose a different server.
  • Requests stuck? Target is down, KEEP FIRING TO KEEP IT DOWN
  • Who/What is the target; Set LOIC on HIVEMIND mode or join #setup on AnonOps IRC and ask.
  • What settings should I use? Join the HIVEMIND or leave it at default w/ TCP. Protip: Dont go over 100 threads.

AnonOps IRC client

AnonOps IRC is an international communication platform frequented by activists, nerds, trolls and those who wish to otherwise remain Anonymous. Connect to AnonOps IRC network using the mIRC IRC client. mIRC is shareware and is free for 30 days. Older versions are available and those are free. Since mIRC does not have native SSL support, users must install SSL separately. See the AnonOps mIRC Tutorial to get the mIRC IRC client and instructions for use.
Unzip mIRC to your desktop.
Start with the mIRC shortcut.
Chose a name.
Type /msg nickserv help to register to talk.
Server: irc.anonops.net
Connect using SSL.
You can either add the -e switch which specifies that the connection should use SSL:
/server -m -e irc.anonops.com 6697
or prefix the port with the + sign, does the same thing:
/server -m irc.anonops.com +6697
